Avicii’s Death Leaves a Hole in the Music World

The world lost an artist today. The Swedish DJ Avicii has passed away in Muscat, Oman earlier today. The reason behind his death is still unknown. His real name is Tim Bergling. Earlier in a blog post, I wrote about the Swedish influence on American music and it was Avicii who was one of the leaders of the movement. He was able to mix original Swedish sounds with American folk styles. He basically invented EDM. Sweden is a leader in the industry and it’s such a shame the world no longer contains him. Here are his career highlights: Wake Me Up: This international hit was the first time country music…

    Eurovision Explained

Why should anyone watch Eurovision? It’s just a bunch of amateur singers wearing too much glitter, right? Well, sometimes. But truth be told, there is always drama worth living for. But what exactly is it? Eurovision is a Song Contest There are 42 countries that compete to have the best song. Most of the countries are from Europe but Australia and Israel are also participants. (Why? Don’t ask me!) This year it’s hosted in Lisbon, Portugal because Portugal’s representative won last year. Here are some attributes of a winning song: Great vocals Stands Out It’s all about the staging and live performance This is the best performance ever going behind…

    Ten Best European Legends: RANKED

These have made history, inspired movements, and make you dance either way. These European legends are the best. 10. George Michael Honestly, he shouldn’t be on this list. His hit song “Careless Whisper” is that tune that every one of your saxophone friends plays over and over again because they think they’re cool. But it’s still catchy and I hate to admit that I hum it in the shower. 9. U2 I’m honestly still mad about that iTunes album drop years ago. 8. Elton John Because he’s the Rocket Man. That’s all I need to say. 7. a-ha “Take on me” is my jam! The Norweigan band A-ha is catchy but…

Upcoming Swedish Hits You Should Be Listening to Right Now

The sunny-pop style is captivating listeners from Stockholm to New York. Sweden is dominating American music.  But what songs should you be paying attention to right now?  You never know; maybe one of these songs will be the next summer hit. Oh and don’t worry, it’s all in English. A Little Bit of Island Sun Kygo is back for the summer and this song is a good reminder of why we shouldn’t forget him. It’s fun. It’s fresh. Yet, it still retains a deep message. This skill is what made me love Kygo’s music in the first place. His sound is very distinctive, mixing island drum rhythms with Swedish sunshine-like sounds. No wonder Kygo…

    The Swedish Takeover of Music

The radio is on and the windows are down. Your friends are sitting in the back seat of the car heading to the beach. You all sing along to the newest hit jam and you are ready to just have fun. The music in your car is upbeat, fresh, and energetic. This music just makes you want to dance the day away. If that’s the case, most likely that song was produced by a Swedish artist. The only thing American about it is the “big star” name attached to the song. But sometimes, the music doesn’t need an American name. Tove Lo, Kygo, and Avicci are Swedish artists who are earning their…

    Russian Beats

What is Russian music like? It’s great dancing music if you find the right song. It’s deep and it’s steady. I like to play Russian music when I’m working on writing articles and essays for school assignments. The language is very sharp so even if a song is slower paced, the language keeps it exciting and moving. You can’t help but bob your head along the music. It’s enchanting. Music in Russia is a lot like Poland’s but I must admit that it’s higher quality. It gets its influence from Soviet Disco Pop which is where all Slavic music gets its sound from. It uses a lot of synthetic instrumentations…

    American Artist to European Sensation

American-Indie artist LP’s song “Lost on You” was expected to stay within a niche group but ended up exploding all over Europe. I love my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist. There, I find songs that I add and never tell anyone about. One day, I found a song that was so beautifully written that I may have cried the first time I heard it. And yes, this song’s in English! No one knew about this song; it was my secret jewel that I played in the car. Strangely enough, a year later, I was touring through Italy and I saw vinyl records of this song on sale at gas stations and there…

    An Italian Mix

The past few weeks, I have been going through an Italian phase. There is something enchanting about the Italian voice. It’s gritty. It’s passionate. It’s moves like oil. It’s fluid and slow in its movement.  So here are my favorite Italian songs and why I love them. At the bottom of this post, I included a full playlist to turn on when you want to go on an Italian adventure. Some songs may be a few years old, but most of them are current.   “You Did Nothing To Me”: Finally a Political Song that Touches the Heart I love this song so much that I can’t turn it off. It’s…

Reasons for Listening to European Music

Someone once told me that listening to music that wasn’t in English was a worthless pursuit. You can’t understand the words, let alone the emotion behind it. While the person was right to state that everything sounded like gibberish to me, they were absolutely wrong in saying I can’t get anything out of it. Since when did the classical music need words to sing the praises of God? Since when did jazz music need coherent sentences to communicate the African-American experience? Since when did electronic, dubstep, “wub-wub,” or whatever need lyrics to make people dance?   Music is About the Experience The experience starts when you plug in your headphones and…
